New author-me.
Yesterday’s pre-schoolbus sun rising over the sea. Crows and crunchy snow and sliding down the hill to the shore because it was too pretty to look at through the window. #riverport
Next week I’m doing a writing relay to benefit the truly excellent @writersfedofns! Sponsor me with a donation to support the literary arts in Nova Scotia! Link in their profile:

“Today is a hard day. I wish I could say why, but the nature of depression is that the why isn’t always identifiable. So here I am. Reading ‘Notes for the Everlost: A Field Guide to Grief’ by Kate Inglis.⁣
⁣
And I stumbled upon this quote on page 122. It helped me take a deep breath. Grateful for the creatives in my life, and for the catharsis I find in creating. Tagged a few of you who I thought might dig these words.”⁣

I made a snuggle cave with my body and a fuzzy thing and a friend’s little black cat who miraculously did not make me sneeze took me up on it. 😍
Such a delight to be browsing the stacks at our local library and find and sign the book I co-wrote with the beautiful @shuttersisters community as founded and led by the amazing @traceyclark. ❤️ Gosh, it was such a whirlwind to collaborate around the globe with this crew of women photographers. Quite a few years ago, but also, a blink. We made a beautiful thing. 📷🤗
Reading Lynda Barry’s ‘Syllabus: Notes from an Accidental Professor’ and thinking about why particular fragments or ideas leap off the page and wrap their little arms around our necks like limpets, clinging to us, self-identifying as ours before we can comprehend why.⁣
⁣
Rumi talks about craft and practice. Since New York I’ve been bumping around bothered, again, by a chronic and unwitting study: how does optimism serve us? How does pessimism? Is there a value, a goal, a cautionary tale attached to being more one than the other? What paralyzes us? What suffocates? What sets us free? What the hell is ‘free’, anyway?⁣
⁣
Thinking about this stuff might be neurotic, which is a slippery word that, if you say it drunk or fast, might sound like erotic. Words like cousins who don’t get along, sharing the same chunk of brain meat, grumblingly. They might be linked: the curiosity around self and power and vulnerability and it’s all very intimate and animalistic and instinctual. It can’t be helped. We all think about ourselves and our states of being more than we’d like to admit.⁣
⁣
Which makes me wonder, as Rumi jumps into my arms: I’ve always been keen to practice, but what is the craft? In trauma; grief; creativity; the discontented heat of ambition. The thinking, the turning-it-over-and-over-in-my-hands. Even when it’s terrifying and dreadful, I never want to not wonder about it. I will always aspire to be a builder with a hammer.⁣
